A Hummingbird Miracle

I have learned much about life, in taking the time to observe these tiny little creatures. They know just what to do by instinct. I wish it could be that simple for us humans. Perhaps we can take a lesson from all this.

Every Year around May, the mother hummingbird comes back to rebuild the “old home place.” It’s a wonder, as she has been gone a year. She has traveled thousands of miles, and always knows how to find her way back to the same nest. She tenderly places each piece of material where it should be in rebuilding the nest.

This miracle takes place just outside my window where I have taken the photos from. It is amazing to watch the progression from the time she lays her eggs to the hatching of her babies. She cares for them through all kinds of weather, always protecting them.

I love to watch her teach them to fly and to see them discover the world for the first time. It is a joy for me, when they have learned to care for themselves. They stay for the summer in St. George, Utah, and I make sure they have plenty of flowers planted. I hang several feeders of nectar for them. The “hummers” themselves are entertaining, beautiful and sometimes humorous. It is sad to see them leave on their long journey to Mexico and South America, in the fall, but I know I’ll see them again in the spring.

I received my first copy some time ago to gift to my neighbor who was a kindergarten teacher. As I was reading the book first, I was really surprised how deep I was drawn into it and how it made me think of my own Mother’s love and guidance received. I think too many times as adults we forget who was there first. This book is a beautiful reminder. You cannot help but to smile. I feel this would be the perfect book for a waiting room in Doctor offices for the anxious patient! These two copies can be found at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. One in the library.

A must for any anxious situations with children. They will be captivated and will think of this life event for some time. In my opinion perfect for all pediatrics doctor and dentists offices.
